Citizen Khan

Ok so I should be sleep, but just switched channels and 'Precious' is on, so I thought Id share my thoughts on the BBC's new comedy 'Citizen Khan' while i watch 'Precious'.

I was really looking forward to watching this show and the adverts actually made it look quiet funny.  I had been telling all my friend to watch it and saying how great the show looked, how wrong was I.

Firstly it was suppose to be set in the 70' or 80's and they used a image of a Asian family from that era, but the younger daughter spent most of the show texting on her mobile phone and spoke about app's she had downloaded.  I do not know any Asian family back then who had mobile phones, even when I was young we did not have mobile phones.  Not just Asian i don't know any family at all back them who had mobile phones, White, Asian or Black.

You ask why has he picked up on such a detail, I did because it voided the setting of the show as it is a representation of a family from the 70's.  They also used the same old tired jokes of the image people had of Asian families from that generation.  This annoyed me because British Asian comedy needs to move on with us, we represent so much more now and they could have brought so many better jokes into this show.  Using an image of a modern family could have brought so much to this show and the girl texting on her phone would have fitted in perfectly.  We have so much more issues and amusing dilemmas which could have been added into the show and represented us in a comical view in the 21st century.

There are so many decent Asian comics out there now who could really inject some life into this show and I feel the BBC needs to be approaching them if they wish to make this show succeed.
